Devin Hume McIntosh, 32, of Falls Church, VA, died suddenly May 2, 2022 in Cherry Hill, NJ.

Devin was born on June 2, 1989 in Alexandria, VA. He was the youngest son of Dennis Francis McIntosh and Susan Hume McIntosh, long-term residents of Falls Church, VA and career employees of the Federal Reserve Board. He was educated in the Fairfax County school system and graduated from McLean High School in 2007. He was a Boy Scout and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in 2006. For his Eagle project he improved the landscaping of the memorial garden at the Church of the Holy Cross in Dunn Loring, VA, his family’s church.

He attended the University of Texas at Austin and was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He graduated in 2011 with a major in economics and completed the Business Foundations certificate program. In 2015, he received a master’s degree in international commerce and policy from George Mason University.

Devin loved all kinds of sports. Football, skiing, snowboarding, swimming, and especially basketball, were among his favorites. He was an ardent Texas Longhorns fan. Wherever he lived he always played in an adult basketball league. He was passionate about teaching sports to kids, especially those who really needed mentoring and wanted to improve their skills. He worked with neighborhood kids and others and was particularly proficient in teaching swimming and basketball. In addition, he coached middle school girls’ basketball teams and was a referee for McLean Youth Basketball. He loved working with kids, and they adored him. As one neighbor said, he gave encouragement to those who were discouraged.

He traveled internationally to help those in need. He was part of a group that built a clean water supply system for a village in Guatemala, where he charmed the village’s children. He was very personable and made friends easily. Many of those friends became very close to him because he had a special gift - he was a very caring individual.

Over the years he worked for a number of employers in the health and fitness industry. This year he decided to change careers and set his sights on becoming a defense trial lawyer. This was very much in keeping with his desire to help those in need; he had an innate affinity for the underdog. He felt the law would be a good use of his communication skills, as he was an excellent writer and articulate speaker. Before his untimely death, he had been accepted at Duquesne University Law School in Pittsburgh, PA and was very excited about starting law school in August.

Devin is survived by his parents and his two brothers, Justin McIntosh (Elena) of Charlottesville, VA and his three children, Joelle, Gabriel and John Pascal, and his brother Jeffrey McIntosh of Chicago, IL. He also will be greatly missed by his aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. In addition, he is survived by his rescue dog, Lulu, to whom he was very much attached.

The funeral service will be held Friday, May 20, 2022 at 11 AM at the Church of the Holy Cross, 2455 Gallows Road, Dunn Loring, VA 22027. His ashes will be interred in the church’s memorial garden. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to SpiritWorks Foundation (https://spiritworksfoundation.kindful.com/), a Virginia nonprofit that serves those who suffer from addiction and their loved ones.
